Pronumele reflexive se folosesc după verb, atunci când subiectul propoziției este același cu direct sau indirect object, adică ce vine după verb.
Zicem: I cut myself with the knife. NU I cut me with the knife.
Studiază exemplele:
Mădălina bought herself a shirt. = Mădălina și-a luat o cămașă. herself se referă la Mădălina.
Mădălina bought her a shirt. = Mădălina i-a cumpărat ei o cămașă. her se referă la altă persoană.
Pronumele reflexive pentru a sublinia CINE
Cu pronume reflexive subliniem cine a făcut ceva.
The CEO spoke to us himself about the product launch.
sau
The CEO himself spoke to us about the product launch.
Sau subliniem că cineva a făcut ceva singur, fără ajutor.
I painted that picture myself.
Pronumele reflexive nu merg folosite ca subiect al propoziției, dar pot fi folosite după subiect pentru a scoate în evidență subiectul.
He himself decided to go on that hiking trip, despite the risks.
He taught us what he himself learned from the lesson.
By + pronume reflexiv
Folosim by + pronume reflexiv cu semnificația de singur sau fără ajutor.
He lives by himself. = singur
The kids cooked by themselves. = fără ajutor
herself sau by herself
Deși similare în semnificație, propozițiile de mai jos subliniază lucruri diferite:
She decorated the room herself. – subliniem CINE a decorat camera (she herself – ea, fără ajutor)
She decorated the room by herself. – subliniem CUM a decorat camera (by herself – singură, fără ajutorul sau compania altcuiva)
Greșeli comune
Nu folosim pronume reflexive cu verbe pentru acțiuni zilnice.
Zicem: He washed, shaved, dressed and went to work. NU He washed himself, shaved himself, dressed himself and went to work.
DAR, dacă vrem să subliniem că lucrul acela e făcut de cineva care în mod normal nu putea face acel lucru, zicem:
The child is old enough now to dress himself.
As / like / except for + pronume reflexive (pentru politețe)
Folosim pronume reflexive în locul unui pronume personal ca să fim politicoși.
As someone who has gone through similar challenges as yourself, I understand how you feel. (sau as you)
People like yourself are what make this community so special. (sau like you)
Everyone needs to leave the room except for yourself, as the manager wants to speak with you privately. (sau except for you)
Oneself
oneself se referă la o persoană, orice persoană, o persoană în general.
It’s hard to learn to love oneself.
In this situation, one must not doubt oneself.
În general, în loc de oneself folosim yourself să ne referim la oricine.
